Books by David English and Pål Granlund / CDs Mastered by Jan Eliasson.
These books tell the full story of the production of the 1970 documentary That's The Way It Is through in-depth research, detailing everything that was recorded (audio) and filmed for the movie.
The Rehearsals book contains unique and previously unreleased photos from the MGM July and August Las Vegas rehearsals, and
The Concerts: book contains unique and previously unreleased photos from the Las Vegas shows, as well as Phoenix, Arizona.
The CDs contain almost everything recorded from the rehearsals which took place in July and August 1970.
The track listing for CD3 lists 18 tracks but there are only 17 tracks on the disc. Track 9 is actually two versions of 'Don't Cry Daddy'.
Although audio exists for part of 'Something (1)' at the August 4 rehearsal (CD6), which was sang between 'Twenty Days And Twenty Nights' and 'Farther Along', it doesn't appear on this set at all.
The tracks from the August 10 afternoon rehearsal on CD8 were recorded on a 16-track tape machine by RCA, but almost all of the intro's were not captured on tape. Here FTD have reconstructed those opening pieces from live performances of the same songs; however, they did not observe the correct running order of the tape.
'Polk Salad Annie' was not only spliced with the intro from the live version, but also has a verse spliced in from the second version of 'Polk Salad Annie' from this rehearsal.
The first rehearsal of 'I've Lost You' is also missing from CD8.
It is a possiblity that CD8 is actually a compilation of songs recorded at the stage rehearsals from both August 9 and 10.
